Why Doesn’t It Taste as Good as I Thought It Would?

Lisa, who had had an absolute rule (which she occasionally broke big time) against eating junk food, had recently started allowing herself to have a moderate portion of a favorite food every day. Some of the food she enjoyed immensely, in fact, more than before, because she was able to eat it guilt free. But sometimes the food, for example, certain kinds of candy, just did not taste as good as she had remembered. We discussed the possibility that because she had denied herself these foods for so long, she had built up a fantasy about how delicious they were. When she finally ate them, she judged that they were good, but not great. Then there were other foods which she really liked, such as cookies, but she realized that she only liked them if she could eat and eat and eat them. It wasn’t satisfying to just have a moderate portion. Lisa is now learning how to eat any food in moderation and she’s discovering which foods she really enjoys and which just aren’t worth it.

  1. Yep it’s interesting how the taste of food changes based on whether you’re “allowed” to eat it or not.

    I also think that after switching to eating healthier foods, your tastes change – sweetened things taste too sweet and junk food takes more like cardboard!

  2. I was forbidden all sorts of things growing up with a thin mom and thus always on a diet. Now as an adult and 9+ years after a gastric bypass, there are certain “foods” I will get a compulsion for…not just a craving, and I will indulge because I actually get really angry and self destructive if I don’t (like Spaghettios) and what makes it worse is that I am totally bottom-less with these foods. The giant cans that are supposed to feed four or more people…no problem. I just do not get full and have this drive to wolf it down. Hover…all of it. Awful. Just bought this book on Audible. Fingers crossed.

  3. I am so excited about this program. I find that I have had to listen to the tapes several times, and I will keep going back…. I have lost 13 lbs thus far. This is the easiest diet I have ever done. It is a no brainer! I think I am starting to look at food differently…………woooo hoooooo!!!!!!!!

  4. A certain candy bar was my weakness. But after eating healthy for a period of time, thanks to my nutritionist, it actually tastes awful! I agree that it’s because my taste buds have changed. I don’t “need” that candy bar anymore. That is good news!
